A recent study on college students' preferences for dating vs. hookups is, unaccountably, generating national media attention. The authors found that a bunch of year-old college freshmen in the South embraced traditional gender norms. The study is called "To Hook Up or Date: Which Gender. None of this is necessarily a bad thing, and if a college relationship isn't for you then of course strictly hooking up makes more sense, but this standard of negating feelings is not one that makes for a positive future in dating. After that break up, I entered yet another serious relationship that occupied most of my sophomore year and the first semester of my junior year. You see, we as college students have been trained to believe that commitment is bad. Because of this, we are taught to do everything in our power to not get attached. Being intimate with another person does not always have to lead to a serious relationship, but it should demand a current level of respect.
Mind games are played and blatant rudeness is excused because the lack of definition to the relationship. Perhaps I am naive or too hopeful, but it seems silly to me that as grown adults college students refuse to be honest with each other and themselves about their feelings.
Despite what we are told to believe, it is perfectly okay and appropriate to actually want to date another person. It is okay to have feelings and to care about someone more than you care about yourself. Be open with each other. Just everyone, please, stop being so emotionally unstable.
